Well we didn’t expect this one. At IFA today Sony announced the latest generation in the Sony SmartWatch line but unlike previous models this one features Android Wear instead of their own platform.
This comes as a particular surprise as Sony made a statement back in March after Android Wear was announced that they were not interested in making device with Android Wear and would instead continue to develop their own platform.
This is actually Sony’s fourth attempt at a Smartwatch (3rd since the split with Ericsson) so they have been in the game longer than any of the other Android Wear partners. They should know what they are doing then.
The SmartWatch 3 has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.6-inch display, IP68 waterproofing, 4GB of storage, 512MB of memory, NFC, GPS and a 420mAh battery. The main stand-outs here (when compared to other Android Wear watches) are the higher level of water resistance certification (IP68), NFC and built-in GPS.
Sony claim the battery should be good for 2-days of use or up to 4 days of standby time which would put it a cut above most of the rest if these figures turn out to be accurate.
Could this be the smartwatch for you? Does Sony’s experience sway you over the others or does another device have your attention more?
