Following the note “Update on bootloaders” on HTC’s Facebook page on Tuesday – telling the world that they were reviewing their bootloader policy, HTC have made another Facebook post…

There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices.
Thanks for your passion, support and patience

Yep last night HTC made the announcement we have all been waiting for: HTC phones will no longer come with locked bootloaders! Samsung have also said they will keep their bootloaders unlocked unless Google requires them to do otherwise (and why would they) plus Sony Ericsson now also have a service that allows easy unlocking of the bootloaders on their new phones. So really we just need to hope this latest move will get Motorola on the same tracks and then I think we will finally see the back of these Apple-esque ‘lock-downs’.

The only other question now is: will existing HTC phones be made unlockable? Probably not I fear, but one can hope…

LONG LIVE FREEDOM!

Update (08/11): HTC have announced a bootloader unlock tool for almost all HTC phones!
