Sony’s having a good day today! First they announced that they are moving their kernel source code form their Developer World portal to GitHub. They’ve put up kernels for many of the major Xperia devices, such the Z Ultra and Z1, with more to come soon.
This will help developers with custom ROM and kernel development for Sony devices by allowing them to access it in a more familiar environment with better code revision control. Hats off to Sony for helping out third-party developers! If you’re interested in getting stuck into the kernel code for Sony devices then you can find the GitHub repository here.
Secondly, Sony have announced they are starting to push out KitKat 4.4.4 on many of their devices starting with the Z1, Z1 compact and the Z ultra. It is great to see Sony getting the update out so fast even if it isn’t such a major one. They will be the first outside of the Nexus and GPE devices to see 4.4.4 officially, even beating Motorola.
Here is a list of some of the improvements you can expect to see in this update:
- Android 4.4.4 including the latest enhancements and security updates from Google
- Updated and improved camera experience
- Improvements when using Google voice, Contacts, Music streaming and Google+
- The latest versions of our Sony apps for you to enjoy
- All of our latest bug fixes, optimisations & improvements
This update is only rolling out in Europe at the moment but other markets will likely follow shortly.
