During Samsung’s Unpacked event at IFA 2014 today Samsung announced a new virtual relativity headset called the “Gear VR”. This is basically a pair of goggles which let you use your Note 4 to give an experience somewhat like the Oculus Rift.
We’ve already seen this idea in the form of Google Cardboard but this is a little more polished on the hardware end and you don’t have to make it yourself. It is also only for the Note 4 and likely a lot more expensive.
This device was actually built-in collaboration between Samsung and Oculus and is designed to “create an immersive new dimension of mobile life”.
Optical Lens with 96° Field of View
- Accelerator, Gyrometer, Magnetic and Proximity Sensors
- Motion to Photon Latency: <20ms
- Focal adjustment to cover near and short sightedness
- Touch Pad, Back Button, Volume Key
- MicroUSB 1.1 (for connection to Galaxy Note 4)
- Headset Dimensions: 198(W) x 116(L) x 90(H)mm
- Box Contents: MicroSD Card (16GB), Gear VR
This is one of those things which is much better seen than explained. As we are not at IFA 2014 we have not been able to have any hands on time with the Gear VR yet so here is a video clip from the event’s live stream so you can see what it is like:
We also thought you’d appreciate some pictures to see it up nice a close so here you go!
