Nokia has already brought its HERE Maps to its own Nokia X Android phone and more recently to Samsung’s Android smartphones and Tizen watches, but according to the Wall Street Journal we could see it on more Android devices, possibly even them all, before the end of this year!
Nokia sees HERE maps as a potentially strong competitor to Google Maps and in order to do that they really would need to be on Android devices as they now represent almost 90% of the global smartphone market and about 60% of the tablet market. This move certainly makes a lot of sense.
The company executive Sean Fernback previously indicated that they want to become a big player in the mapping business when he made the following statement:
“I’m convinced people are looking for alternatives. Google Maps is a good solution for many, their maps work very well, but it has looked the same and done the same for a long time.” – Sean Fernback
One advantage of HERE maps is that it will allow users to download maps for offline use and still be able to search without the need for an Internet connection.
What do you think, would you switch from Google Maps if HERE Maps was available on your device?
