Last.fm Updates From Pre-Holo Style To Material

This post was published 9 years, 7 months ago. Due to the rapidly evolving world of technology, some material it contains may no longer be applicable.

The Last.fm app has rocked the same pre-Holo design for way too long, but now the app finally got the redesign everyone has waited for. Material has arrived.

We often complain about companies such as Facebook failing to update the design of their apps to the newest standards, but really this was ridiculous on another level entirely! I am pretty sure the look they have been running with up until now is older than this site (which started in January 2011).

The functionality of the app remains pretty much the same after the update, only now it’s much faster. No more clunky, animation-less interface from the Eclair era, instead we have a fresh material design that’s far easier on the eye. That said, there are a few new additions so here is the full changelog:

  • Complete redesign
  • Scrobble from more sources including Soundcloud, Spotify, Rdio and more..
  • New personalised charts including artists, albums and tracks
  • ‘Love’ tracks

The app is still far from perfect though and still finds ways to drive you mad at times. For instance, clicking on your profile just takes you to the website rather than actually being part of the app. It isn’t a huge deal, but it’s certainly quite annoying and you’d think that after so much time they’d include something as simple as that.

Hopefully, that will be addressed in the next update. Although, based on how long this one was in the coming, that will probably arrive in 2020! I’ll be sure to reference this piece as I write the article: “Last.fm Updates From Ancient Material Design UI To [insert new design language name here]”

Oh, and if you have never used nor seen the old app before and feel like a good laugh, here is what it looked like up until just a few days ago:

Be sure to update the app in order to save your eyes from further pain and to banish the mess that was before. If (like many) you’d given up and uninstalled the official app by this point then you can grab the new version Play Store using the widget below.
